This program builds on prior knowledge of area of plane shapes from Year 9 and aligns with the Australian curriculum. Students enhance their skills in selecting and using formulae of varied shapes and solids, including pyramids, cones and spheres and perform calculations to find the area, surface area and volume. In addition, they gain greater competency in understanding the limitations of measurement and confidently work with different units of measurement.
This learning program is made up of the following 5 topics, broken down into 27 concepts.
Calculate the volumes of cylinders
Solve a variety of practical problems related to the volumes and capacities of prisms, cylinders and related composite solids
Find the volumes of composite solids involving prisms and cylinders
Develop and use the formula for the volume of right prisms and find the capacity
Develop and use the formula for the volume of cylinders and find the capacity
Review area of triangles, quadrilaterals, circles and sectors
Calculate the areas of composite figures by dissection into triangles, special quadrilaterals, quadrants, semicircles and sectors
Calculate the area of an annulus
Solve problems involving rectangular or triangular prisms
Apply Pythagoras' theorem to find surface areas of triangular prisms
Find the surface area of a hollow cylinder
Surface area of composite objects
Use the nets of prisms to find surface area
Find the surface areas of triangular prisms
Find the surface area of a cylinder
Find the surface area of rectangular prisms
Converting units of length
Rounding of whole numbers and decimals to significant figures
Investigate the meaning of prefixes such as 'nano', 'micro', 'mega', 'giga' and 'tera'
Convert between metric units of volume
Convert between metric units of area
Convert between metric units of volume and capacity
Convert units of measurement using standard form of metric prefixes, index laws and scientific notation
Determine the limit of reading of a measurement or measuring tool
Determine the absolute error based on the limit of reading
Find the lower and upper limit of the true measurement based on the absolute error
