Overview

Financial Mathematics in Year 9 is a component of the Statistics and Probability strand of the Australian curriculum. Concepts covered in in this learning program include calculating rates of pay (hourly, daily, weekly, fortnightly, monthly, yearly), understanding tax free thresholds and calculating taxable income. In addition, students are taught to calculate simple and compound interest on money borrowed or invested.

Topics & Concepts We Cover

This learning program is made up of the following 3 topics, broken down into 20 concepts.

  • Income 8 concepts

    1. Calculate rates of pay given an hourly rate and number of hours worked, including employee timesheets

    2. Interpret pay slips and perform calculations

    3. Calculate leave loading as 17.5% of normal pay for up to four weeks

    4. Calculate earnings for hourly rates of pay, overtime and special allowances

    5. Calculate weekly, fortnightly, monthly and yearly earnings

    6. Calculate earnings based on piecework

    7. Calculate commission including sliding scale

    8. Calculate earnings based on royalties

  • Income Tax 5 concepts

    1. Net income

    2. Calculate tax payable using current tax rates

    3. Determine a worker's tax refund or liability

    4. Calcuate medicare levy

    5. Calculate annual taxable income

  • Simple and Compound Interest 7 concepts

    1. Calculate compound interest using different compounding periods

    2. Solve problems involving compound interest and depreciation

    3. Calculate depreciation

    4. Application of simple interest to solve problems including purchasing on terms and reducing balance interest loans

    5. Establish and use the formula to find compound interest with annual time periods

    6. Calculate compound interest for two or three years using repetition of the formula for simple interest

    7. Using the simple interest formula
