Overview

Linear Relationships is an important part of Number and Algebra in the Australian curriculum. In this learning program, students describe geometric patterns, identify a rule from a table of values, record and plot coordinates on a Cartesian plane and identify linear relationships.

Topics & Concepts We Cover

This learning program is made up of the following 5 topics, broken down into 22 concepts.

  • Coordinates on the Number Plane 3 concepts

    1. Plot non-whole number coordinates on the Cartesian Plane

    2. Plot whole number coordinates on the Cartesian Plane

    3. Identify and record the coordinates of given points on the Cartesian plane

  • Identify Linear Relationships 4 concepts

    1. Check pattern descriptions by substituting further values

    2. Describe a geometric pattern in words and replace with an equation

    3. Build geometric patterns that increase or decrease and record them in a table of values

    4. Determine whether a particular number pattern forms a linear or non-linear relationship

  • Using Rules 5 concepts

    1. Derive a rule from a linear graph on the Cartesian plane

    2. Complete a table of values from an equation

    3. Find a rule using a table of values

    4. Determine whether a point lies on a line by substitution

    5. Sketch a linear relationship from a table of values on a cartesian plane

  • Graphing Multiple Lines 3 concepts

    1. Graph more than one line on the same set of axes

    2. Identify similarities and differences between groups of linear relationships

    3. Graph two intersecting lines on the same set of axes and read off the point of intersection

  • Linear relationships extended 7 concepts

    1. Determine the gradient and y-intercept from a graph

    2. Sketch a linear graph using the coordinates of two points i.e. x and y-intercepts if possible

    3. Finding the x - intercept at y=0

    4. Determine the gradient and y-intercept using the gradient-intercept form of a linear relationship

    5. Use the gradient and y-intercept to graph a linear equation

    6. Find the gradient of a line between two points using rise over run

    7. Finding the y - intercept at x=0
